Hey ya'll! This is my inaugural blog post and I'm going to be honest....I have no idea what to talk about. That's not because I have nothing to say (I think we all know that's not one of my issues). It's because I typically have soooo much to say. So I figured I would take the easy way out and just re-introduce myself (this was clearly in my Jay-Z voice).
My name is Dr. Raquel Martin and I'm a licensed clinical psychologist, professor, mother, wife, and all around scattered human being (at least as of late). I wear many hats...and should probably toss a couple out the window, but that's not happening any time soon. You may have found me from social media, my podcast, or just randomly browsing the internet (feel free to comment below how you found me) but either way I'm glad you're here.
I'm from Philly but currently reside in Nashville, TN. Yes, I actually love country music, no you will never see me downtown, yes I enjoy Hot Chicken, and No I don't get mine from Hattie B's. My favorite things to do include reading, blasting rap and hip hop way too loud, and hiding from my toddler sons. I enjoy hanging out with them too, but they're a bit obsessed with me at the moment so I hide...a lot.
I am hoping that this blog space can be an avenue to share some resources that I find for Black mental health, let out my thoughts on everything from what I'm watching (Bob Hearts Abishola) to what I am reading (Binti) to just random frustrations (when did we decided that all pants were now ankle pants).
Now I'm still learning how to do all this, I've said it a million times but it's just me behind the wheel of this thing, at least for now, so bear with me as I learn how to add all of the fun gifs and media and all that.
What do you want to hear...or is it read....I'm so used to video lol. What do you want to read from me (that still sounds weird)? Comment Below.
Welcome, Dr. Martin! This is a much-needed topic, and I look forward to hearing how we can remain productive, caring, and good citizens while prioritizing and protecting our mental health. It’s a lesson I continue to learn, especially as I face some hard truths about the people I once called friends.
Hi Dr. Martin-
I found you on IG. I am a Black Women who works in predominantly white spaces with a high demanding leadership job. Your content brings me to a community I crave all day till I get home. Thank you for being you. 💚
Does anyone know how to change information...can't find my profile. Thank you. I am here for good.
Omg I found you. Ok was looking for a community I can be honest on.
I found you in IG and I’m so so grateful. I’d love to hear about things that “we’ve gotten wrong”—like our common misunderstanding of attachment theory (you started to go into it on IG but ran out of time; it was about secure bases), and why “anger languages” are so important. What else are you thinking about that could be useful? Honestly that anger languages one has been life changing for me. Thank you for being here. 💜
